Beverly Gard, Oboe

Beverly Gard, 27, began playing the oboe at 9 years old. She was always drawn to music at a young age and the sounds of the oboe inspired her to select the oboe as her first instrument. Since then, Beverly has been performing, teaching, and studying music throughout her entire life. Beverly began the further development her professional oboe playing in high school where she studied with Professor Karena Creasy.
Beverly earned her Bachelor’s Degree of Music Education with an oboe concentration from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam where she studied with Dr. Anna Hendrickson. Beverly has also earned her Master’s of Music Education and most recently her Doctorate of Music Education in 2023. Beverly has also earned her Professional Oboe Performance Degree from Penn State where she studied under Dr. Andreas Oeste.
Teaching music is Beverly’s full time occupation where she has taught general, instrumental, and vocal music to students of all ages. Beverly’s passion is to see others experience the joys of music just as she has been able to do throughout her entire life.
This is Beverly’s first season with the San Antonio Community Orchestra. In the past, she has played with ensembles around the country including Scruffy City Orchestra (Knoxville, TN), Penn State Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band, Bucknell University Orchestra, Bloomsburg University Orchestra, and The Crane School of Music Concert Band and Symphonic Band.
Ema Deguchi, Bass
Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra in F-sharp Minor by Serge Koussevitzky (Movements 1 & 2 Only)
Ema Deguchi was born and raised in Japan and immigrated to the U.S. with her family in 2016. She played piano and Japanese taiko drum from a young age but took a break from music before rekindling her interest in piano in 2020. Upon entering Harlan High School in 2022, she began studying bass under Mr. Saltibus, developing a deeper passion for music. Now a senior, Ema enjoys performing in her school's orchestra and jazz ensembles. After graduation, she plans to pursue music at UT Austin.
