Frequently Asked Questions

Is an audition required to join the orchestra?

No audition is required! The only requirement is that you are able to read music as we do use sheet music. Even if you can only read sheet music a little bit, feel free to bring your instrument and come play with us!

Chairs and music stands are provided.

I play a wind/brass instrument. What if you already have too many of this instrument?

We welcome musicians of all wind and brass instruments (and other instruments!), even if we already have players for your part. We don’t mind having multiple musicians doubling on the same part—it adds richness to the ensemble and creates opportunities for collaboration and learning. So, whether you’re a seasoned performer or just looking for a place to play, there’s always room for you here!

Send us an email at SanAntonioCommunityOrchestra@gmail.com and let us know what instrument you play! We will reach out to you via email to provide you the passcode and link to the music and/or put you on our contact list so we can reach out to you when we play something that includes your instrument!

When/Where are rehearsals held?

When: Rehearsals are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Where: Choir room at Coker Methodist Church (231 E North Loop Road, San Antonio). The choir room is inside the main church building. Use the far right door and take a right as soon as you enter the building.

Bring your instrument and a smile and please do not be shy. We love and welcome new members into our group!

Note: We do take a month or so off for the summer break and a few weeks off for the Christmas holidays.

Can I join at any time?

We welcome anyone to attend our rehearsals and play with us! Please note that we take a short break during the Christmas season and summer. Our orchestra performs six concerts annually, but aside from these breaks, feel free to join us anytime.

What types of players do you have in the orchestra?

We have a variety of players in our orchestra ranging from high school/college students to young professionals, retirees, beginner musicians, retired musicians, returning musicians, and even some very accomplished musicians!

However, we all have one thing in common: we want to play music together and have fun!

What type of music do you play?

We perform a variety of music, including classical and non-classical works, as well as themed concerts like Christmas or Halloween. Our repertoire includes pieces suited for musicians who are new to their instruments or returning after a break, alongside works that challenge and help us grow as an ensemble.

We also enjoy featuring our members’ talents—whether it’s performing concertos for their instruments or showcasing original compositions written by our musicians.

To get a taste of what we play, check out our YouTube channel for samples of past performances, or contact us for a preview of our current/upcoming repertoire!
