Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to attend a concert?

Concerts are always FREE!

The San Antonio Community Orchestra is made up of 100% volunteers (conductor, musicians, soloist, media, etc). Our low overhead expenses allow us to give free concerts to the community.

Is an audition required to join the orchestra?

No audition is required! The only requirement is that you are able to read music as we do use sheet music. Even if you can only read sheet music a little bit, just bring your stringed instrument and come play with us!

The sheet music, chairs, and music stands are provided.

Feel free to join us for any of our rehearsals!

Where are rehearsals held?

When: Rehearsals are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Tuesday.

Where: Choir room at Coker Methodist Church (231 E North Loop Road, San Antonio). The choir room is inside the main church building. Use the far right door and take a right as soon as you enter the building.

Bring your instrument and a smile and please do not be shy. We love and welcome new members into our group!

Note: We do take a month or so off for the summer break and a few weeks off for the Christmas holidays.

What types of players do you have in the orchestra?

We have a variety of players in our orchestra ranging from high school/college students to young professionals, retirees, beginner musicians, retired musicians, returning musicians, and even some very accomplished musicians!

However, we all have one thing in common: we want to play music together and have fun!

What type of music do you play?

We play classical works and non-classical works. We even sometimes have concerts that are themed (e.g. Christmas, Halloween, etc.). Some pieces we play are geared toward those in our group who are new to their instruments or just getting back into playing. However, occasionally we may play pieces that stretch our skills a little bit to help us grow as musicians!

Feel free to check out our YouTube channel to see samples of our prior concerts or contact us to get samples of the music we are playing!

Do you accept non-stringed instruments?

Yes we do! Send us an email at SanAntonioCommunityOrchestra@gmail.com and let us know what instrument you play! We will reach out to you via email when we have a concert that needs your instrument.

We are more focused on inclusivity than authenticity. Therefore, we are more than happy to have multiple instruments on a part if we have too many of one instrument. We will always have room to include you!

How do you you communicate with your members?

Our orchestra utilizes the app Remind to communicate with orchestra members. You do not have to download an app to sign up for notifications (but you can).

To sign up for notifications, scroll down to the bottom of the For SACO Members page for instructions.

Can I be a soloist with the San Antonio Community Orchestra?

We love to spotlight soloists from our community and collaborate with local musicians! Send us an email at SanAntonioCommunityOrchestra@gmail.com and let us know you are interested in collaborating!

What if I want to donate to support the San Antonio Community Orchestra?

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and we do accept donations. Feel free to use the below button to submit a donation to our organization via PayPal!

We don't have a lot of overhead expenses, but sometimes we do need funds. Usually funds are to reimburse the church for their services (e.g. moving the grand piano for concerts), purchasing/copying sheet music, and other incidental expenses.
